LEGO Mindstorms EV3 31313 Review and Price

Lego Mindstorm EV3 Review

First of all the positive aspects : The newly added pating 4 Motor connection now makes possible much more complex robots (to drive / steer you need already 2, the old because there was only one for other actions , now you have at least another 2 ports for hook -free , etc. ).

The programs seem faster than on the old begins ( at least my impression , I have no direct comparison to the old there). In the software, the connections for the data lines have become clearer.Quite nice is the IR sensor with a simple remote control. The EV3 could be a nice evolution of the NXT so , but unfortunately there are a lot of annoying stuff that can spoil the fun but then a :Linux : On the EV3 even now running Linux.
The need for power ' ne felt eternity to boot ( about 30 seconds) and longer ( about 40 seconds) to turn off . Is that really necessary ?

Linux on a 'nem Lego Brick may well be quite cool for hackers (the real hacker would certainly enjoy it , because itself to port a Linux on it ... ) , but for normal use that's unnecessary overhead
only computation time costs .And if you have even a Linux makes the EV3 -brick it, why is there then the software only for Mac and PC , and not for Linux ?

The software : do not accompany the software ( 594 MB) from the Internet, you have to download .
This will certainly lead (not only) Christmas in areas with poor internet connection to 'ner lot of bad humor . ( The people are now able to program computers without the EV3 -Brick , is due to the very small displays graphical programming and operation using only 6 keys only a stopgap measure .

Joy comes here not to . )Then there are the system requirements : Recommended at least 2GHz dual core with at least 2 GB of RAM. That's not necessarily what so standing around with us and our circle in the nursery.

The good news is that it goes well with less , does it run as also on my netbook with 1GHz dual core and 1 GB RAM. , although very tough.Again, I ask myself again : Must be all the overhead of LabView ? A functionally similar , graphical programming interface should be added to get even with much less resource hungry.

Immediately as a app for Tablet: Is in nurseries today probably at least as common, such as a PC , and working with a touch-based user interface would offer in the graphical programming anyway .Really annoying is the noise in the " lobby " ( the home screen ) .

I've been looking , but still found no possibility to deactivate. If someone 'nen button is to mute button , please contact us!As I said, the data lines have become clearer. On the one hand is nice that they have different colors depending on the type .

Even better it would be if I could choose the colors freely . I have for example a PID controller programmed to follow the line while now intersect a lot of the same color " numeric" lines while the others colors almost not needed. The Android app for controlling the robot , unfortunately I could not try because I was on my smartphone simply could not clear out enough space ( 66 MB were not enough for , as far as I could tell from the description , a simple forward - off-reverse motor control ? ? ) .
Included with the ultrasound now instead of an IR sensor is okay, but that's only one button , one is a bit stingy . Especially since the euphemistically called " touch sensor " is available as an accessory button with 29 euro is anything but favorable .Was earlier still a mat with a black line to follow in line , as a playing field with the Inenseite is now printed on the carton .

Unfortunately, the only long line , which you could follow the Licht-/Farbsensor , a red boundary line. Since the light intensity sensor works with red light , the difference in brightness to the white box inside is very low. So if you want to edit the default task " follow line," what must paint itself.
Conclusion: The EV3 could easily have become a good or even very good robot kit. Unfortunately, Lego has geschaft then to screw up there with lack of attention to detail and total resource wastefulness of the programming part of it . Total remains a streaky appearance. Too bad .
